Engine replacement

Just had my engine replaced by non-dealer (private party) and the engine light stayed on while driven back to my home.  I don't want to drive it further until I know if this is just a matter of the computer resetting itself or if there is something we need to do to reset it.  Would appreciate any response.

have some one scan it first   the light would not be on unless something was wrong.
