Infinity Radio (Cassette) Woes

I have a 92 Town and Country.  My original radio recently had a problem where it essentially ate my cassette audio adapter, which I could only get out after removing the radio.  I just replaced the radio with a slightly newer one (from a 1994 Chrysler) and the tape deck in this one is behaving in a similar fashion, except I haven't put the adapter in yet.

On my old radio, even after the adapter was out, the tape carraige stayed down, causing the radio to constantly try to check the tape.  In the "new" one, it is doing the same thing, but at least now if I press the eject button, it will try the opposite tape direction before switching back to the radio.

My question is, could this be a vehicle related issue, where there maybe isn't enough power going to the radio, or parhaps a faulty connection?  Or did I get a bum deal on the replacement radio?
