Question '02 Concorde steering wheel "sleeping"

Hey everyone,

Got a major problem here, the other day i was driving my concorde and i tried to make a fast turn while braking and a jumped the curb and knocked out a pole with a concrete base. The point is; my power steering fluid cooler got cracked and it started leaking. On my way home the fluid got drained while turning the wheel there was grinding for a while then it got quiet because it reservoir got fully drained. Then the steering wheel seased up and i really had to muscle my way through to turn the wheel a bit. The leak got fixed 2 days after and new fluid got put it. On low rpms the wheel gets real hard to turn, but it only happens at random times. I took it out on the road and a couple turns after it started sleeping then it let up and it kept happening. Does anyone know why it might be doing that? just FYI the new cooling hose is home made from what i believe it copper piping. I could be wrong though.

It sounds like air is in there.

Honestly i have no experience with power steering fluid in any cars. My first thought was air pockets causing issues though.

Yeah, thats the only conclusion that we came to as well. I traveled about 16 - 18 Kms without power steering fluid so alot of air could have gotten trapped in there, and after pouring the oil in it only trapped the air in there. I will take it out for a spin again today and see how it behaves.

Thanks

I don't know if it's air in the system or not, but the procedure for bleeding is simply to turn the wheel side to side (without hitting the stops) until the air is out. It seems like if that is your problem, you may be doing that as you drive.
