Diesel Jeep Liberty felled by emission regulations
Like the Volkswagen Jetta, Golf, and Beetle, the diesel version of the Jeep Liberty will no longer be sold in the United States. The reason? The engine doesn’t meet tougher federal emissions standards that go into effect next year, according to the Detroit Free Press. Also like Volkswagen, Chrysler decided it wasn’t cost-effective to the replace the engine with a more modern version. On Friday, Chrysler announced a new diesel Jeep Grand Cherokee with clean ‘Bluetec’ technology. Late last month, we reported that Volkswagen had confirmed plans to drop three models for 2007 due to the regulations. In December, Leftlane News exclusively reported that emission regulations could force automakers to halt sales of many diesel models.
