Default 2002 Sebring - Transmission "pauses" when going in gear

Good Evening All,

My wife told me the other day that her car has been "slow" to go into gear when she puts it in gear, going out of park into drive, from drive into reverse, etc. That she shifts the gear, but that it seems that the car is in "neutral" for a few seconds before it "recognizes" that she has changed gears, or that sometimes it doesn't recognize it until she tapes the gas, when it seems to "lurch" a little bit into gear, then is okay.

She then told me today that when she is going down the road, when braking somewhat hard (meaning, stopping at a light from 40-55 or so), it seems to "jar" a little bit when slowing down, though she doesn't change gears.

I took it for a test ride tonight, and noticed the things she describes.

Does anyone have any indication/suspicions about what the problem might be? At first I just attributed it to the colder winter weather here in Central Maine, but, it's warming up now, and it's not better.

Thoughts?

Default Follow-Up...

Hi all,

Based on some of the things I'd read here last night, when I took the car in for an oil change today, I had the automatic transmission fluid replaced too, kinda hoping that it might be air in the line, and since the vehicle is now 97,300 miles, it seemed due.

So after they replaced the transmission fluid, I took it out for another test ride. It actually seemed that the "studdering" problem of downshifting when braking had gone away for about 10-15 minutes, but then it returned. We haven't experienced the problem of it going into gear when first coming/going in the morning (that seems to have gone away with the warmer weather, after discussing it with my wife this morning), but even after replacing the transmission fluid in the car, it was fine for about 10-15 minutes, and then the problem seemed to return, as bad as before.

So I'm not sure what to think...anyone got any ideas?

check fluid level, or this might be a future sighn of tranny failure, this happened on our jeep and the fluid happened to be low, ruined the whole tranny. happened on our minivan, tranny exploded......

Default Transmission Fluid change

I had the transmission fluid changed today, emptied and completely replaced. Shouldn't be any problem with that...

Thank-you!

They re=engineered the transmission solenoid. Runs smooth, gearing is smooth and pick up is faster without any pause. Check into it! They will not tell you.
