Default Fuel gauge problem after replacing pump (97JXi)

I've had my Sebring for almost two years after buying it used. After recently replacing the fuel pump with a brand new one, the gas gauge in the instrument panel reads empty, the trip calculator reads 1-4 miles to empty, and the light is on. I have filled it up, driven it dry, and still nothing. I am not extremely experienced with working on fuel systems, and this was my first in-tank fuel pump, though I did have help from a more experienced friend. I was wondering if anyone knows of any particular procedure they may know which I wasn't aware of, or if anyone has any ideas at all. I've checked fuses, wiring, and even taken the pump back out and made sure the float wasn't on the wall. I'm planning on taking it back out for a much closer examination, but would like to know everyones advice on what to look for, and what else it may be.

Thanks
