Default Starter Problems

1996 Sebring with 2.5 V6. Got the car free with only known problem being head gasket was blown. The car will not start though. Won't turn over. The startery gear is not coming in full contact with the flywheel. I can hear it slightly touching the flywheel but it's a faint grInd. The starter has been tested on and off car and it is working properly. Have even swapped two other starters and same problem. Any suggestions???

Check the battery voltage. Check the wiring from the battery all the way to the starter looking for corrosion or any other cause for a bad connection.

Default Starter Problem

Voltage is correct. The starter is engaging correctly on and off the vehicle. Just not enough contact with the flywheel to turn in over.

Well, the flywheel hasn't moved, we can be pretty sure of that. Can you inspect the teeth of the flywheel to make sure they are not broken off in that particular area?
Take some measurements of the amount of movement you are getting with the starter pinion and the amount of movement you need to get to engage the flywheel.
Can you turn the engine over with a wrench on the damper pulley nut?

It's possible that with a blown head gasket, one of the cylinders has filled with coolant. If it won't turn by hand, pull the spark plugs and try again.
