Question Fuel Saver Mode???

So, we've had our 08' Aspen since the beginning of summer; LOVIN' IT!

Today, I just had a tow hitch installed so we can go camping this spring (fingers crossed). On the way home I noticed that the com read "Fuel Saver Mode". Um...didn't know we had that! Because, had I known I would have been doing that since day one.

Is this something that happens automatically? I like the 15.6mpg read out much better than 12.1!

BTW, we're using 87 octane if that matters.

Hello,

The car is fitted with mds that shuts off four cylinders under light load hence saving fuel. This is what you see on the display as fuel saver mode. I have not had my aspen long so I will let others comment on the difference in fuel consumption this mds v non mds.

This JUST kicked in today though. It was on when I started on my way. I drove the whole home with it engaged; even though my first real move was to get on the freeway.

I presume you have a 5.7 Hemi because you didn't say. Yes, one bank of cylinders drops out at cruising speed to save on fuel. That is called the MDS/Multi Displacement System (I think). You should be using 89 octane in your Hemi as that is what is recommended. This will be even more important when you tow.

It should only engage and show the "fuel saver" message when you're at speed and the engine can maintain speed with only 4 cylinders. If the message is showing when you're accelerating, you need to get it checked out.

I have an '07 with a Hemi and I've never seen the "Fuel Saver" message. Does the message pop up on the overhead display or is there a light on the dash?

It's in the overhead display.

I'm pretty sure that the fuel saver mode in the com panel up top does not display fuel saver mode on an 07. I believe that was something that they decided they might actually care to show you on 08-09 models. I have an 07 and have never seen it, despite getting approximately 18 mpg hwy. There's no way I'd be getting 18mpg hwy if it wasn't in msd/dod mode.

Double check the manual.

Ditto on this one. My '07 doesn't have the display and I, too, get around 18-19 highway.
