Default Overheating

I drove from Virginia to New Jersey and got caught in heavy traffic. The temperature gauge started to reach the 3/4 mark and the air condition started to get hot. When I got to New Jersey I checked the coolant and I needed to add some while the engine was still warm. The next morning I checked the collant and topped if off some more. I then drove from New Jersey to Montreal and got caught in heavy traffic. The temperatute gauge started to go up again and I hear the engine laboring as I started moving forward which is the same sound I experienced when I drove from Virginia to New Jersey.

Any of you experience this and if so how was it resolved?

Thanks
