i just brought a 2004 chrysler pacifica and i keep getting a dvd could not read error message it says to check the dvd and try again even when theres not a dvd in there is this just because i dont have a nav disk or some thing more

I pulled the DVD. (Note: The DVD player for the navagation is Under the black cover which forms the recess in the back lift up panel. Pull up like you're going to access the spare and it's on the LEFT side below the speaker)
This now gives me an "Insert DVD) at startup (Key on) Put the disc back in and it tries to boot but gives DVD error. I think the DVD player is bad since it has to run pretty much continually when the car is on. I've got >200k on this with now major service issues. I'll try and hack this and replace the DVD with a standard DVD-PC unit.

This is a little less than going price on e-Bay for a "hope it works" unit from a junk yard + you get a warranty. ...that is when they even are available.
