Default Bad BCM or different problem?

I have a 2008 Pacifica 4.0 engine. Last year I discovered no right rear turn signals; checked bulbs and they were fine. Took car to auto electrical specialist. They replaced BCM (body control module) and it fixed the problem, but at $475.00, that's an expensive turn signal fix. Jump ahead to present, and I am without right rear turn signals again, and of course the 12 mo. warranty on the BCM expired in June. I did add a hitch a few years ago and the wiring connects to the vehicle wiring behind the right rear turn signal/brakelight fixture, so I'm sure my hitch light wiring hook-up is causing a short. My question is, will a short damage the BCM, is it ruined, and/or can it be re-programmed? I don't want to buy another one. Also, if I can find a BCM on a similar year/engine Pacifica, could I just install it or would it need 'flashed' by a Chrysler dealer? Thanks ahead for any help and advice.
