Help: Oil leak from somewhere

There is no TSB or Recall for this problem. And the PT is not the only car that has this problem. If a chrysler tech has been around for a while, They would have seen this problem with the early minivans. 3.3 and 3.8 engines.

Matt, I posted a reply a few minutes ago but wanted to respond to your post. Most times replacing the seal wont do. From what my mechanic told me at minimum it would need a crank kit and a seal and quite possibly a short block. Chrysler mechanics measured the play and mine was .025 but it should be .oo4-.009... Call Chrysler at 800-992-1997.. I think prompt#4 is to make a complaint. Have you VIN# and when you reach a CS Rep, explain the issue and give them your information. They are probably going to make you take it to a Chrysler dealer before doing anything for you but you can always try negotiating this. Good luck with Chrysler and let me know how you make out.

Hi, I just joined the forum and your oil leak issue had me reading some more threads. I have a 2007 PT touring with the 2.4 liter engine. Mine has 49,000 on it. Wife came home stating the oil light was on. Could see oil leaking so I checked filter, pan nut and the oil fill cap., no issues there. Checked the dip stick and no oil registered, added 2 1/2 to 3 quarts and engine oil registered in the correct range. started the car and the oils started leaking and I could see it was coming from the front of the engine. Brought it to my mechanic and he informed me the front crankshaft seal was leaking and that there was a lot of play with the crank. Seems this is a common issue with the 2.4 liter motor. I called the NHSTA and they stated they had received numerous complaints... Any way, in my case, just replacing the seal won't fix the problem..Others posts I have read stated the seal started leaking again within a week to 1000 miles. This was a post by a person who's PT was under warranty and Chrysler replaced the seal twice. My mechanic stated a crank-kit with new bearings and the a seal replacement were needed. I trust my mechanic and have used him and his father for over 30yrs. A crank kit is required along with the seal...And if the crank had to much play, it's also possible that the crank has eaten into the block. The short block may need to be replaced as well. Not cheap by any means. Seal only, $600, seal and crank kit $1200, seal crank kit and short block, up to $4000. Could be cheaper to put in a used engine but then could end up with the same issue. Long story short, I contacted Chrysler and they gave me case file #...The warranty ran out at 36,000 so I am trying to get Chrysler to step up and cover the costs. They told me I had to take the car to a Chrysler dealer for diagnosis, $100, and then get back to them. Car goes to the dealer on Wednesday... No car should have these type of issues with 49,000 miles. Most cars today should go 200,000 miles as long as you do the maintainece. Just wondering if anyone else on the site has had this problem and if Chrysler stepped up to the plate or left you out to dry. Keep an eye out for oil leaks because if it's the front crank seal your not going to be happy.

When i first Purchased my 2006 pt, after about 3000 miles on it i had leaking of the oil and i couldn't figure out where it was coming from, my dad and i took up to the dealer and i guess there was a recall on it (at-least My year) but i guess the engine mounts were faulty and the engine was walking when i accelerated. we had to have half of the engine and mounts replaced, i haven't had a problem since, well besides the Oil pan bolts coming a bit lose from over time and i had a small leak but that was a simple fix by tightening them.
Not saying that is the problem but i figured id just throw it out there.

2001 oil leak
Hi, I just joined the forum because I was reading regarding oil leaks for PT Cruisers. I have not noticed any oil leaks at all. Back on 2/29 I took my car in for an oil change and today 3/5 my oil light came on. I checked the oil and drove it back to where I had the oil change done. They informed me that I have a leak from somewhere because the drain was tight and so is the oil filter. Oil is everywhere under the car. It looks like it's possible coming from the passenger side of the car and blowing as I drive everywhere else. Down side is: Oil light is still coming off and on, oil is full, and so is the antifreeze. This is definitely oil under the engine. I even put a clean cardboard box underneath to see for any leaks. I was reading about the crankshaft seal. Where is that located on the engine? Could this be my problem based approximately where the majority of the oil is located? I know the head gasket could be it also, I doubt that is it because the antifreeze if fine and the oil is still full. Please help advise before I take this to a garage and they try to talk me into a whole lot of money I do not have.

I figured it out now, last night i had the car up on jack stands and got under it and again clean the bottom of all oil, than started the car again while it was still on the jack stands. after about 15 minutes of running the car,i did not see any oil flow again, it was crazy it just stopped leaking. Than i thought about it for alittle bit, than it came to me about, i month ago i had my oil changed at Jiffy Lube, and i think what happen was when, they changed the oil and filled it back with new, they must have spilled some down the engine and, it found its was to an area where it just sat until i jacked the car up, than dripped down from the bottom of the car. I fill like a retard now but, i'm glad i figured it out because, i was just about to pay the dealer $100.00 to tell me what was wrong.

The leak may still persist but is very minimal
the noise that came out from the engine when you first started it is very normal...when you let the car sit for a while, all the oil in your motor goes to the bottom of the engine and the top will need some time to fill up with oil once you start it...so it will make a noise (Normal)
you should take a look at the engine again once in a while because it could still drip some oil...
if the oil changers did spill oil then it would leak from the passenger side because the filler cap is on passenger not driver side.
the only thing i could think of that leaks on driver side would be the valve cover gasket or the camshaft position sensor...
if you remove the air cleaner you can get a better view and if it is the cam sensor then you could remove it, clean it and the O ring, then put some sealant (Grey Recommended)

Dodge and Chrysler have also been know to have a bad design on oil pressure sending units which can cause oil light to come on and/or an oil leak on back of block just about 6 inches off center

My accord was also giving the same problem but my mechanic told that it was because of worn gaskets and high oil pressure , so he told me to replace it.
