Default 01 Sebring gauge problem and random stalling

On the way to work this morning i had some problems in my 01 sebring and need some help trying to figure out what happened. I had just turned a corner and was getting up to speed when all of a sudden the car started jerking like it was trying to find a gear, then the tach gauge started spinning around and acting up then the car just died. I checked everything out on the side of the road and everything lookied fine. I was able to get it to restart but every time i came to a stop the tach gauge would start acting up again. It never died on me again but am trying to figure out what could have caused this or what went out. Will see if i have any check engine codes tonight when i get home. Does anybody have any ideas as to what might be wrong.

Thanks,
Ben

Crank position sensor? That would be my guess if the tach rose crazily but the actual engine rpm did not.

Well drove the car to work again today, same problems. The gauge mainly acts up when you put the brakes on. Part of me is thinking it might be the crank sensor but would like done other ideas on what might be the problem.

Rather than guessing, why don't we start with getting the codes and go from there?

Well the only codes I have right now are ones I already had and they are po455 and po421. I know one is a vacuum leak and other has to do with catalytic converter.

ok.. I have two more questions to maybe point out to some issue that has to do with weather changes:
- Where are you situated (my account doesn't give me the option to check where you are)?
- When was your last spark plug change?

I am in northern Indiana. I've only had the car about 2 months now. Haven't done anything to it yet.

You brought those codes up a couple of weeks ago. If you don't believe the response you got here back then, go on line and look them up. They are P0455 (evap system leak) and P0421 (catalytic converter efficiency). You will have an easier time looking them up if you spell them correctly. It's P0455 (P zero four five five) not po455. There are several websites on line that discuss OBD-II (on-board diagnostics) codes.
I would be surprised if the behavior you described, (stalling, etc.) has not set an additional code or two. Get a good code reader and see if you can pull them out. They'll read your codes for you at Autozone for free.
Your 3.0 L engine is notorious for distributor problems. Search the board here and you'll see lots of discussion on that.
Since your coupe was built by Mitsubishi, you might find more information on Mitsu boards.
