Hi going through the same thing. I did some research as you can see in this forom under my ID and everyone says not to use a differant motor use another 2.7. I just found a 2.7 out of a 2004 sedan with 16000 miles on it. Not sure where you are from but here is a #800-649-9337 they have an 2004 2.7 36000 miles.I would have boughtthis if I didn't alreadyfind one. This motor I am telling you about is in Freetown Ma. Or go to www.car-parts.com and search your area. Russ

My first post:

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I just wanted to share my experience with other members and same them much money and time.

My wife has 01 Sebring that the engine blew up on her while I was away. I come back from my trip to find an 04 engine in it that will not start. The local mechanic gave up on it and the dealer took close to $600 to say they can't find what is wrong with it.

To make a long story short, If you want an 04 engine to run with existing 01 engine and tranny computers, this is what you have to do:

1. Use the flywheel from the 01 engine. 01 and 04 fly wheels have different slot patterns for the crank sensor.

2. Use the cam pulley fixed to the cam gear (bank close the bumper) from the 01. The pulley on the 04 engine have different slots for the cam sensor.

Note that step number two is very delicate as it requires messing with the timing chain as the pulley on some of these engines are riveted on to the gear and some are bolted. If you came across the riveted ones, you will have to take the whole gear out and pop the rivets, and you might mess the timing if you are not careful.

good luck with all of you guys.
