Exclamation 2002 Gear Selector Issue

First off, sorry if this has been asked somewhere else, I tried searching but didn't find anything.

I have a 2002 sebring limited with a strange problem with the gear selector. When you go from park to drive normally the indicator on the dash will stop at neutral. If you "slam" it down into drive it will match up just fine. Similar issue with going back up into park. The selector is in the park position but the indicator on the dash says reverse, unless it is "slammed" up into park.

No matter what actual position the selector is in the transmission only matches what is on the dash. I'm just curious if anyone here has ever seen this or has any idea what it could be.

Never experienced this, but I would suspect the shift cable is either loose or in need of adjustment. Remove the air cleaner box and check the operation of the shift lever on the transmission that is moved by the cable. There's a bolt that is supposed to anchor the cable at that end. Make sure it's tight.

Adjustment of the cable requires removal of the center console. There's an adjustment nut under there. To make the adjustment, you make sure the trans itself is in park, put the shift lever inside the car in park and snug the nut down.
