as drivinghome last night and my headligts quit working, the brights work but regular headighs don't what could it be? I checked the fuses

 

Start with checking the bulbs. The bulbs each have two filaments, one for brights and one for dims. If the dim filaments are burned out, the the lights will behave exactly as you describe. And yes, it's possible to have both sides burned out at once. If the filaments old or weak, a physical jolt or a voltage spike can burn then both out. Another possible explanation is that you could have been driving for some period of time with one burned out and not been aware of it, then the other one burned out. Check the bulbs.
