"how difficult is it to replace the serpentine belt and idler and tensioner pulleys?"

Not difficult at all if you know what you're doing and have the right tools. Check it out in a shop manual and since only you know your skills and toolbox, you can decide for yourself:

Chrysler Sebring and 200 and Dodge Avenger for 2007-2014 Repair Manual covering the Sebring Sedan (2007-2010), Sebring Convertible (2008-2010), 200 (2011-2014) and Dodge Avenger (2008-2014)

"which alternator is recommended to buy?" The correct one of course. You can look it up on line or have the guy at the parts store look it up for you.

just an update..........shopped for the parts and found that the local chrysler dealer was competitive with the box stores and online sites. took me about an hour to do the work. yes it is a 120 amp alternator, so the dealer says. the other sources only offered a 115 or a 140 amp replacement unit. i'm a happy puppy now. cheers

Now that you have actually done it, can you offer any insight for anybody else who may want to tackle this job?

the job was actually fairly easy. removed the overflow tank so it was out of the way. next loosened the belt by using a 16mm socket . first , i made a diagram of the belt so i could reinstall correctly. i removed both top and idler pulleys and the tensioner pulley. just remember the tensioner pulley has a left hand bolt. i did not have to remove the whole tensioner, just the pulley. took out the top to the alternator and loosened the bottom bolt only and removed the alternator. the bottom bolt doesn't actually go through the alternator, just helps locate the bottom of the alternator in a groove. reassembly was basicly the reverse procedure. cheers
