Default 2005 T&C Error Code P0404

Overthe past three weeks the CEL has come on displaying code P0404...I believe this is the EGR malfunction code. The light will come on for a few day...go off for a few day...then come back on. This has happened three times now.

Is it recommended to replace the EGR valve when this code is given...or could it be from something else? I hear it is a dealer part, but would it be easy for me to do myself? Anyone know the cost or part number?

The van is the 2005 Town and Country LX with 3.3L engine.

I tried to embed a couple pictures...is the EGR valve any of these?

Thank a bunch,
Joe

Default RE: 2005 T&C Error Code P0404

I looked around and it looks like there are some people that say this error coming on intermittently may be caused by the cold-air intake clamps being loose? Where those are I have no idea though. I also found this site for replacing the egr valve on a 99, but from the pics, it looks fairly similar. http://autorepair.about.com/library/a/1i/bl221i.htm. Hope that helps some.

Default RE on EGR

You are correct it is an issue with the EGR system. Before I reccomend replacing the valve I would remove it(make sure to have new gasket and throtell body cleaner befor starting) once removed use the cleaner and clean all the carbon build up on the pintel. It controls how much if any exhust pass by. as far as parts it depende on a few tings i will give you the part options and numbers. they are as follows;

1. E.G.R. VALVE - w/Mid Year Tracking - [Part number supplied for pricing only. Dealer must be furnished with VIN for proper application.] $119.00 part number 4861635AG

2.E.G.R. VALVE - w/o,Mid Year Tracking - [Part number supplied for pricing only. Dealer must be furnished with VIN for proper application.] price $118.00 part number 4861662AE

**** AS U CAN TELL U HAVE TO CALL THE DEALER FOR WHICH ONE IT CALLS FOR

AND HERE IS THE LABOR THE PRICE WILL VARY DEPENDING ON THE LABOR RATE THEY USE;

1. ENGINE EMISSION SYSTEM - Check - [Includes: Check exhaust utilizing analyzer, adjust ignition timing and idle speed.] time for diagnosis 0.7hrs that comes to $69.30 based on $99.00 per flag hour. *MOST PLACES WILL CHARGE A 1.0 HOUR DIANOSIS CHARGE SO DONT BE SUPRISED I HAVE ALSO SEEN SHOPS CREDIT IT TORWARDS THE REPAIRS IF YOU DO IT.

LABOR TO REPLACE THE EGR; E.G.R. VALVE - Remove & Replace - w/Alternator Removal HOURS CHARGED 1.1HRS COMES TO $108.90

2.E.G.R. VALVE - Remove & Replace - w/o Alternator Removal HOURS CHARGED 0.9HRS COMES TO $89.10

THE BEST GUESS I WOULD SAY YOU WOUL PAY BETWEEN $330 TO $390.00 THE PART PRICES ARE DEALER PRICES THE TOTAL I HAVE INCLUDES TAX.SHOP SUPPLIES,HAZ MAT A LOT WILL DEBEND ON WHERE YOU GO. i DID NOT CHECK TO SEE IF PARTS AVALIBLE AFTERMARKET BUT EVEN IF THEY ARE I RECCOMEND DEALER PARTS. HOPEFULLY THIS WILL HELP YOU SOME I DID NOT SEE AN RECALLS WHEN I LOOKED THEM UP

Call your dealer's parts dept with the vin to get the correct part number.. Then head to rockauto.com and order it. (Under Emission) $49-63 depending on which one need.. either "XZZ" or not "XXX".. dealer will tell you. I changed mine on our '05 in 2009 right at 100K miles. I also did it on my buddy's '05 as well. No need to remove the alternator for the 2nd bolt, sometime a swivel and the right socket helps. (Or at I did not have to.. some people say they had to.. maybe diff alternator.. who knows).

In fact, at youtube one comment was " It is correct that after removing the top bolt simply move the valve toward you to reach the bottom bolt."

Here's a link to you tube video on replacement.

Chrysler Town and Country P0404 P0406 fix EGR Valve Replacement How to - YouTube

Lastly, for rock auto, google "rock auto discount code" and you'll find a 5% off code.
Good luck.
