Thank you for the help.

"" lights up on the dash"" is the now 'legacy' from before you undid the connector. You might find that after a time [known good starts ratio] the light will switch off - some do - some don't. I'm assuming you mean the x3 wiggly lines RHS icon, this is also a condition of the temp monitoring [not the external temp in the overhead display where the compass is] if that connector you undid was still 'alive' would switch on / off the Webasto. Suck it and see for 500 miles and see what happens, unless you have a free friend with a good diagnostic its not worth getting it cleared. Best of luck.

It was a cold morning today and the heater tried to come on. PULLING THE PLUG UNDER THE BONNET/HOOD DOES NOT WORK.

What does "tried to come on" mean ?. Its dead, no power !

Of course the car's BCM will 'try' to send a signal when the weather reaches the pre-coded temp but its sending a signal to an electrically dead unit.

I did not ever mention the 'bonnet/hood' ! .. .. .. I clearly said "under the car".

Default Aux. Heater 2.5/2.8CRD 2001 - 2008

We use the same manipulation in reverse to 'shock' the unit into life when it goes dead because of a software error either on the onboard EEPROM or the cars puters.

The vehicle will of course not switch on regardless if :
- less than 1/4 full of fuel
- not cold enough
- mechanically broken
Actualy Aux heater has a seperate pipe into fuel tank and is liftet a few cm's abow the suction pipe to engine and it's way below 1/4 fuel level. If fuel gauge to calibrated correct the aux heater will stop when yellow low fuel light is on. And it dos not have any thing to do with the fuel gauge it's fully mecanical limit.

Aux. will start if cabin heater is on max and outside temp. is below aprox 10 deg. and engine temp. is below aprox 67 deg.

So if you got a bad thermostate and is running cold all time the Aux. heater will burn until it die.
