Default IR DVD Audio Problems

Hi All. I have posted about this before but have not looked into it properly. I have a 2004 Grand Voyager with a Mopar DVD and overhead panel. The headphones work on an IR system. Whilst it appears to work in principle the IR system seems poor. Depending on where you sit and how tall you are (small kids in the back) the headphones either pickup the signal or they dont. I tried sitting on the second row and have to stretch my head up to receive the signal. Is this normal ? Is it just that the system is not very good ? Its very frustrating with 4 kids in the back shouting...."I CANT' hear it......I CAN hear it" during journeys. Ive tried different headphones but is still the same.
Does anyone have any help ?
Is it possible to re-wire the audio output from the DVD unit (or overhead panel) to say a 3.5mm jack socket so the kids could just plug there normal headphones in ?

Any help with this would be great !

Cheers, Chris.
