Default Need some help tracking down a Whirring noise...

Hey folks,

New to the Front wheel drive minivans, and the wife just picked up a 2006 Chrysler T&C Limited to replace our Scion. Needed more seats for the Family to fit now. Van meets all the needs, and its a nice driver, so I want to make sure it lasts quite a while.

BUT... driving (warmed up or cold) there is a whining sound that I could only describe as gears slightly misaligned on the driveline that get increasingly louder as you put more load on them. Would this be something relatively easy to fix in the transaxle? Or maybe it is something else such as the CV joints?

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Does it change sound when you turn? It could be a wheel bearing. Drive down a straight road and get up to a speed where you can hear it. Turn the wheel left and right long enough to get the van to shift weight. If it gets louder or goes away depending on which way you turn its a wheel bearing. Let us know.

I've had wheel bearings go out, not a sound I would really relate to that. I'll take it for a spin once I get back to the house to an open parking lot where I can get the weight shifted and see if I can get the noise to come on with turns. Mainly I hear it under load driving straight.

Reminds me more of my gear whine from a bad pinion gear install on my 87 mustang...thats the kind of whine I am hearing.

No wouldn't be the alternator as it would change pitch as the van shifted. This noise is pretty consistent. With vehicle speed. Does this car have a speedo cable? Or is it electronic?
