there is no hole behind the egr valve in cylinder head where exhaust fumes should come trought
it is solid aluminium in middle of the egr mounting bolts where the hole should be

Hi Samil,

Ok, firstly NO DO NOT drill a hole. It's done 200,000+ miles on it like that, so I doubt there was an error/incorrect part fitted all this time!

P0401 is "Exhaust EGR Flow Insufficient"
So you need to locate the EGR and it probably just needs a good clean, there is a decent walk through at Tizzy1 and others DIY information - DodgeForum.com

Have a read through and see how you get on.

Hmm,

I think somebody has blanked the EGR off on yours, you say your dad owned from new, did it have a 'performance/mileage' increase at some point in it's life?
Either a friendly garage or a friendly mechanic I think replaced the EGR with a blanking plate. So this improves mileage on it, but will generate the fault code and you'll have to keep resetting it as it's a 'fault' as far as the engine ECU is concerned.

Not a major concern though, just clear the fault and move on I'd say.

Okay, first off...
Just because you have a P401 code doesn't mean there's a problem with your EGR valve.... it means what it says, the FLOW going through your EGR valve is not correct, this could be caused by a few things such as :

1. pipes leading to egr valve are blocked
2. wiring harness or connection to egr valve is intermitent
3. depending upon engine design, a faulty PCV valve
4. EGR valve is dirty and needs to be cleaned where it's valve seats or the pintle part... don't look from the outside at the shaft thats all sparkly and new and think its clean, REMOVE the egr valve and clean the pintle...

As you wish. It looks exactly like any of thousands of 3mm mild steel / stainless standard 'standard stamped metal' EGR blanking plates on eBay anywhere in the world - have a look. I've blanked all my cars since e2-laws were invented and I've seen and used several. Best of luck.

The EGR system is a continuing source of amusement and frustration. I have had EGR codes, on and off, for years and each time I think it is fixed - it is not. However, I recently discovered a sensor that Chrysler does not seem to mention anywhere - it sits in the Intake Manifold and senses Pressure and Temperature. I had nothing to lose so I pulled it out (one bolt) It was absolutely full of a tar like carbon substance and there is no way it was sensing anything, so the ECU believed there was an EGR problem. This sensor has 4 wires going to it and sits right behind the OIL Dipstick. I would suggest that everyone with a 2.8 CRD clean this each oil change - unless you like the little orange light on the dash.

I renewed this boost pressure and temp sensor a few months ago after my car started shutting down on acceleration from a stop, not booting it take note. I still have the power temporary cut on booting it though but I've put this down to the EGR leaking and weakening the mixture on the boot. Blanking required.

Every individual motorist knows [or should] the cost in their pocket of MPG with the emissions directive. The debate raged all the way from Euro1 for decades until the VW scandal hit on Euro6 about a year ago. When the VW scandel hit people felt robbed, the fact is they've been robbed since Euro1 but in the particular Euro3 when suddenly all 1900cc common rails went from 55MPG to 40MPG if you were lucky.
