P0406 and occasional engine stutter 2005 T&C
Wow, doing a search on "p0406" and "chrysler" seems to come up with a lot of people having the same problem with the same vehicle and model year [X(]About 2-3 a day I'll get this weird stutter/hesitation from the engine on acceleration. Then, the CEL will throw the 0406. Now, the CEL is throwing all the time and it seems the engine light is on solid. I tried putting some DEG inside the plug that connects to the EGR. That seemed to take the problem away for a bit, but that was a few weeks back.
It look like I now have this problem at about 77000 miles. Exactly a few miles past the $3,000 extended warranty I bought and never got to use for anything!Getting the usual runaround from terrible Chrysler service. High price quote, "they don't know what's wrong til they hook it up" , etc.
Could anyone give me some sure bets on fixing this problem? If it means replacing the "EGR" valve, is that something I can do myself? Is there any way to clean this thing? What about that rumor that the gas cap can throw this code?If it is a part, how much should that part cost? Please don't make me rely on Chrysler service again. I really, really, really, hate those guys. Every time I've ever brought it in for work the problem never gets fixed. I either need to fix this myself or somehow take it to someone who isn'tcompletely useless like Chrysler dealer.TIA!

Whoah. Do I have to drop that entire starter? motor to get that last darn bolt out for the EGR? My ratchets just won't quite fit in there and I'm rounding the edges of the bolts. The auto parts store says they can order me an EGR for around $100. Are you saying that one won't work? I need to get it from Chrysler dealer? Thanks.
Also, is there any way to clean the EGR? What is causing the break? Thanks.

drop the starter???? humm wrong side of the engine bro the EGR is on the pass sdie the starter is on the driver side on the tranny.
What u use is a 8mm swivle socket and an extention. The code is for the electrical part not the mechanical but they are built into each other. The chrysler one is less money and made for it call a local dealer with your vin number.

Thank CT! The EGR valve fixed it like "magic". However, the job was bloody !@#$$ thanks to the butter-soft bolts holding that EGR on. Through all the messing close to the alternator I managed toround the bottom bolt out. So, I had to drop the alternator and literally drill a hole in the bolt sideways and managed to wrench it out with a small screwdriver.
So, what's the deal with the EGR? It it just designed to break? The running and performance problems seem to be gone now too. I swear a few problems I've had for the past 40,000 miles or so are also gone. Sounds like this is some sort of weak link in these vehicles.
