Default Rough idle and won't start after warm

Replaced the AC compressor and Alternator. At first it would start and run really rough (missing) and then die. I would have to turn off the AC and it would start right up. Over the period of a week it was increasingly worse until now when it is driven for some time and shut off, and tried to be restarted.....it barely starts, runs really rough diesels and then barely runs...I have to pump the gas peddle to keep it running and then it slowly gains RPM's but still backfires a little. Once it goes thru that it runs fine and there are no issues.

Scanned and come up with the following codes 1684, 0171, 1530.

It is a 2004 T&C with 230,000 miles....believe it or not I just had the transmission rebuilt. The shop said they had never seen a tranny 604 tranny go 230K miles.

1684 Battery disconnected within last 50 starts.
0171 Fuel trim system lean bank 1.
1530 Throttle actuator control (TAC) Module Internal Circuit.
I take it its a Diesel.
Whole thing sounds like the dreaded air in fuel problem either entering at fuel filter or purge pump diaphragm.

Being a T&C I guess it's going to be a petrol - don't think the former colonies have diesel voyagers

The 0171 means that then ecu can't stick enough fuel into bank1 of the engine to get the mixture right. Look for vacuum or air leaks first.

The throttle sensor error shouldn't make a difference with starting as during cranking and initial start most ECU's ignore things like that.

You do need to get the codes cleared and see what comes back as they may be just stored codes.

I had cleared the codes and the 0171 is what come back up after a short drive. I have checked for vacuum leaks to no avail.

It is strange, when I first try to start it in the morning....the first time I try it cranks and sputters, the second try starts right up.

When it is warm and I turn it off, it starts but deisels, spits, sputters for a bit and then it runs fine the entire time I drive until I stop and turn off the motor again.

(It is a gasoline engine)

Any ideas?

Thanks

I think when he says "diesels" he means runs with a lot of knocking like an old-style diesel.

Sounds like its not getting the extra fuel required to fire it up. Reminiscent of the old choke control not working. But when its running its ok so tells us running system is ok.
If not air in system look to engine temp sensor.

Took to Pepboys the said it was fuel pump. They wanted 726.00 to change it. I changed pump and filter for 130.00 from Pepboys parts. Took me about 3 hours with 3/4 tank of gas...would have taken a lot less if tank was empty. I did it on garage floor with minimal tools.

Running great now....hopefully will get another 230k miles out of it.

130.00 £/$ is a good buy for pump and filter. So it was fuel system right enough. How did Pepboys work out it was the pump, or was it just a gamble to try this and that.
