just got a 96 cry. t&c
just got a 96 and it needs a trans I think. it throws codes
P0700, P0731, P1784, P0500
when looking at it didnt do anything. got it home and i raised the rpm to 3000 rpm and it will start to more. but dont go far and stops. but not everytime. now it will go somtimes into reverse and then it wont.

sounds like it may be bad, assuming you verified that fluid level is ok and the differential pin didn't fail.
I'd guess (since there's really no way to accurately pinpoint a diagnosis without actually testing) that the line pressure needs to be tested. then most likely a rebuild. Fortunately these transmissions are cheap and easy to rebuild. They are even easier than the chrysler 904/727 or GM TH350/400 Or Ford C4/C5/C6

Me too, 1997 T & C no reverse
I have lost reverse entirely, forward gears seem okay. Fluid level ok. The codes I got were, P0171 (engine lean) P1784 (Left rear pressure switch check) P0733 (Gear 3 Incorrect ratio) and P070 (Transmission Control System Malfunction)
Dealer says "make an appt to come in and for $90 we'll run diagnostics" - I know the handheld scanner is just a starting point, but if this info points in the direction of internal problems, I will have to wait for a rebuild; hubby just went back to work after 8 months UE. What do you consider cheap to rebuild/replace? Thanks!

99.9% probability that the transmission needs to come out. don't bother with diagnosis. the fact you have NO reverse is an internal failure. See it has no electronic control for reverse. you can take the transmission computer right out and still have 2nd and reverse no matter what. so with reverse not functioning, expect a trans replacement or rebuild. I suppose you're over the pond and not in US

wow, that's a lot of money. The price for a rebuild kit in the US is $150 USD which is about 87 GBP
These transmissions are the easiest to rebuild and even remove/install. I'm down to 2hrs to r&r. But I take my time on this part to make sure everything is perfect.
When I'm bored, I rebuild a few for future use. However just about the time I get one done, I need it. Funny how that works. I charge my customers under 700 GBP or $1200 USD with a 12 month warranty if the van does not have a trailer hitch.

Everything is so much more expensive in the UK.
The first gearbox change was a recon and it went after 8000 miles though 13 months after fitting. The company refused to repair it under warranty so I went somewhere else and had it repaired.
Here is an example - new caliper from Chrysler Uk - £150.00

ya I added two qts and its at the correct level now. I have reverse and forward. first is fine hit second. and it just slips and sticks in second. limp mode I think. but can drive around in reverse all day long. any special tools for rebuild? Iv found a place to bench rebuild for 600.00 I am mechanically incined just never did it. also what the diffrence between the early and late trans for the 96?
