Default HELP! Bought a cirrus. Broke down now.

Hey all. I recently bought a chrysler cirrus. its a 1996 with the 2.5 v6 in it.... i drove two and a half hours to buy the car. it had been sitting for over two years, but i know it was always maintained. anyways. i was almost home when it died on the freeway. im thinking it is the distributor. the previous owner said he was used to getting like 30 mpg, but it had went down to 25 mpg, and he said he thought it needed a distributor. I called around. the prices are absolutely crazy! i was also told it might be the coil. is the coil on top of the distributor?? i pulled one of the plugs, it smelled like gas... (the plugs were autolites... ick).... i snapped it on the wire, and tried to crank the car.... no spark.... so it has to be the dist or coil, right?

is there a cheaper way to fix this? a rebuild kit for the distributor? any advice is appreciated....

btw the car has 157k on it.......

the distributors are big $$ on these car's and i just recently sold one so i would assume they are common, it could also be the fact that the car sat for 2 years and could be moisture in everything. i know that doesn't really help you but i do know the distributors are common on these cars as i've sold one in the last week, plus afew in the past
