Default 2000 Town and Country turning over but not starting

Hello and thanks for having me.

We have a 2000 Town and Country with about 150k miles.

About 3 months ago when we would pull out on to the road and accelerate the van would knock once (almost as if something inside the engine made contact with something is shouldnt have). At the same time I checked the oil and it was about 1/2 qt low so I figured it was from that and each time we heard it there after I would check the oil and sometimes it would be slightly low and other not.

Fast forward to this last weekend.

My wife had an interview and she goes out to the van and the engine turns over but does not start.

She misses the interview and I go into test-mode. I check the plugs, I turn the van to the on position and I beleive I hear the fuel pump.

I do some more research and today I bought a can of starting fluid.

I sprayed in the airbox and the van started.

Heres where the odd part comes in...the van stayed running. I shut if off after 20 mins and it started right back up without starting fluid.

Any ideas as to what it could be?

Thanks for your help.

-Stephen

This may be an impossible question but is it safe to drive and if so from your experience would you expect it to last another month or 2 or will it likely undriveable in a day or 2...the reason I ask is that I would like to avoid doing the repair right now if possible due to financial limitations.

I understand you can't predict how long it will last but from your experience do fuel pumps die shortly after this starts happening or just act up?

Thanks alot
