New member, 2000 300M: Timing belt job info needed
Hi everyone,
My name's Jeff and I am trying to keep my son's 2000/300m w 3.5L in drvable condtn: It has 160k, crunched hood frm a grge dr, caved-in back dr from a hit /run, 2 frnt wndws don't function and kind of starting to feel its age. It has new balljoints, tires, frt brks, hdlt, battery, all of which I did excpt the balljnts. I am not a seasoned mechanic and my questions are on general advice on the replcmt of the timing belt and water pump. I don't hv many tools but can use someone's puller for the crank pulley and I hv changed a water pump ('68 442) before plus I do have the Chiltons manual on this car. I guess I'm wondering abt the sensibility of taking on this job, the pitfalls, special requirements, abilities, knowledge, time involved etc. I shld be able to get parts incl. WP, belt, and drv & timing tensioners for $300 vs. if that belt breaks (NVR changed!) there is no viable replcmt vehicle for him while he is in school and right now he's using it to deliver for work. Any advice, warnings, common sense help are greatly appreciated! Thanks.
