the biggest danger i can think of from static electricity (besides getting hit by lightning) is static discharge when filling a gas can... though i have never actually heard of this happening... hence the warnings about placing the container on the ground before filling... wonder if it has caused an explosion... web search might confirm or deny, if you believe everything you read online or anywhere else for that matter...
