1996 LHS electrical problems
 

First of all, everything on the car worked fine until 2 weeks ago, then the power windows went out at the same time the automatic temp console went out, as well as the ABS light and airbag light coming and staying on....a few minutes later, everything came back to normal, and the windows worked as well as the A/C.

This happened everyday, but the car always came back to normal after a matter of minutes. Now this condition is permanent, not intermittent....I've already checked all the fuses inside the car as well as those fuses under the hood, and I can't find anything wrong there. There are some relays under the hood, but I have no clue how to troubleshoot those....this is obviously an electrical problem, and I have even tried disconnecting 2 relays and swapping them to try and find out if it's a bad relay problem, and that hasn't worked? Just looking for troubleshooting tips from the experts here as it appears everyone here has a chrysler, so maybe this problem has already popped up and been fixed in the past. Thanks in advance!

Really simple.......If you noticed...The radio May or may not work at times, and You also May have Intermittent problems with your windshield wipers......

Now.....A question for you.....WHAT DO THEY ALL HAVE IN COMMON ????......

They all need the Ignition Turned to the Run Position to operate.......

Thanks for the fast reply...I was also thinking it could be the ignition, but just not sure how to test the theory without installing a new ignition.

Take the steering column covers off...You will probably find the fat Pink wire charred to a Crisp.....

I haven't bought a repair manual for this car yet, but I was going to get one tomorrow....hopefully it shows how to dissect the column as I haven't actually looked at that yet, so I haven't seen the wires themselves yet....but here's an interesting side note....this ignition switch isn't original.

When I bought the car, I got the ignition key, and the keyless remote, but no key for the trunk, or doors. I went to the chrysler dealership with the title, and wanted to get a key cut from the VIN number for the doors....that's when I learned that the key for the trunk was supposedly the same key for the ignition....so I bought a car that had already had the ignition replaced by someone, at some time.

Anyway, if the pink wire is fried, would you suggest replacing the ignition switch, or something else?

Update: I replaced the ignition key lock and the problem disappeared for a few days and the problem came right back.....is there a way to jump the electric windows without taking the door apart so I can at least have air movement in the car? I would sacrifice my AC system to at least be able to roll down the windows until I can permanently fix this electrical problem...

crazy issue there. The key i have actually does not open the trunk. Maybe the previous ran into your pink wire problem....

Problem solved: the ignition switch was bad and the new one cost $30.

All electrical systems work again, finally!
