1999 LHS starting issue

Hey All, got an issue I'd like to run by you. I did a search of starter problems, and got bits and pieces of info, but still wanted to ask.

I have 170k on my '99, with the v6. The last couple weeks I've had instances when trying to start it. It's very random, and no rhyme or reason. I turn the key to start, and I get no sound, no activity. I did not notice lights or the like when this happens. It was usually accompanied by an expletive or two, so I wasn't looking at the lights. I'd return the key to off, then try to restart, and it would start up. Some times the second start attempt was accompanied by about 1 second of the "starter sound", but not start--it would cut out. The 3rd try (up to this point) would get me running. I was curious about the battery, having the car 3 years and never had issue with it (or even seen it). I pulled the battery, and it was a Diehard Gold from 2003. (There's something to be said for plunking down the extra $$ on a good battery.) It's been through many cold Northeastern winters and never gave me a lick of problems. But due to it's age, I replaced it to be on the safe side. I had no issues for about a week, but it's happening again. I have access to a code reader, if that may help. I was going to throw a new starter on it this weekend, figuring that was the culprit. I just want to get some different opinions on this before I drop $120+ that I may not need to. ANY advice would be appreciated. Thanks all!

Steve

One addition: when I mentioned NO ACTIVITY, that means no starter activity, the seats would still go up into position, etc.

Most likely starter contacts are shot. Many how to's and parts here
