Brake Upgrade
I have a 2000 300M with 103,000 miles on it. I had a repair shop do a brake job on all four wheels at about 80,000 a couple of years ago. Ever since the brake job the brakes have squealed a little, and lately it was pulling to one side during hard braking which probably indicated a sticking caliper. I decided to do the brakes myself this time, and buy high quality parts all around to ward off any problems.
I bought a set of cross-drilled and zinc plated rotors on Ebay from Cquence. For brake pads I used the Carbon Metallic from Performance Friction. I also replaced all of the calipers with rebuilt ones. However, I painted the calipers with high heat black spray paint to improve the look a little. The total cost was around $480 for everything. When assembling, I kept everything very clean and used synthetic brake grease on the guide pins, bolts, and the back of the pads. After a little break-in period, the brakes are fantastic! No squeaks or squeals, and excellent braking performance. Hopefully the galvanized rotors will not rust for a few years. I recommend this course of action for anybody who complains about their brakes on a car that is 7+ years old. |
