There's a big reason "car guys" are very different from the Silicon Valley crowd. Cars have to work, and work well, in all kinds of weather and under all kinds of conditions. If you left your smart phone in an airport parking lot for a week or two in January in Minnesota would you expect it to work when you came back? Have you ever dragged your PC through a puddle of salt water? Cars are expected to endure all this and much more. To be able to do so, they have to be tested to a fare-thee-well during "product development". The process is not "design-build-sell". It's more like "design-build-test-redesign-build-test-redesign-build-test etc." That's why it takes years. Elon Musk is beginning to find this out.
