1997 sebring starter electrical confusion

a few months ago my sebring didn't turn off when i took my keys out. I unplugged the positive battery-nut and disconnected it as much as possible. when they touched they seemed to be turning the car on even without the key inside of ignition. I parked it for a while and then last week I jumped her and she turned on fine.. and turned off fine... but then she would not start up again.

with a multimeter we checked and the starter motor is fine, the wire leading to the starter motor is fine, and the starter relay is working just fine.

We THINK the switch is fine and the wire from the switch to the relay is fine because even though she doesn't turn on, the relay clicks when the ignition switch goes to start.

to start the car I have resorted to taking the relay out and making a direct link between the output on the relay and the positive battery-nut with the keys at "run" in the ignition. now it works fine, but I don't need to fix it and have no ideas anymore.
