2001 Sebring instrument cluster probelms

OK so about a month ago my girlfriends Sebring's did something really weird that I haven't heard any other car doing.

She would be driving and after a while it would ding once like the door was open and all the needles fell to zero for a second or two and when the needles came back all the dash lights except the blinker lights came on for a second.

It only did this once a drive no matter how long then after about two or three weeks it did it every five or so minutes.

She was driving and everything fell and didn't come back. (everything reads zero) and none of her icons light up other than the blinkers.

I have been working on cars for years now and I have never seen this. I haven't looked at the car because she is out of town this weekend. So does anyone have any ideas on what is happening that I could check right away when she gets back? Or at least some where to start to narrow down the possibilities.

Thanks much

You can test the instrument cluster and gauges by holding the trip/reset button on the instrument cluster, then turn the key to the "on" position, not start. Release the button. It will test all the gauges and lights, as well as tell you system software info and any codes present. "Done" will appear when finished.

Low system voltage can also cause odd things to happen.
