2004 Sebring broken camshaft

As my title says our 2004 Sebring has a broken camshaft and I'm not sure if I should try to fix it, replace the engine or move on completely and junk the car. It has the 2.7l v6 engine. I'm hoping I can get some direction here. I guess the 1st question is if I can replace the 2.7 with the 3.0? I have been hearing a lot about the engine sludge issue on the 2.7 and I'm not too sure if this could be the cause in my car also. Any insite is appriciated. Thanks in advance.

The 3.0 is a completely different engine. The plumbing, electrical, exhaust and computer are all different.

If you could manage to actually get a 3.0 in there and functioning, you would have a car that wouldn't be worth half what you will have spent to get it running.

That is not an option.

Thanks for the information. I just hate to invest much with the posibility of sludge in these engines. I guess I'll have to keep doing some soul searching before I make my decision.

I would suspect that sludge formation is more a function of proper maintenance than engine design. Modern, sophisticated (dual overhead cam, 4-valve) engines are probably going to be less tolerant of lax maintenance.
