2007 sebring trans/brain problem?

I have a 2007 sebring. 2.7 engine. When I shift into gear at first there is a harsh bang. After the bang the car drives fine but this is a problem. I took it to the dealer and they told me that the piston seals were worn out and they wanted $5,000 for a transmission change. I was able to find a trans that had less than 30,000 miles. It was in perfect condition and looked like it was never used so my father (who has changed at least 10 transmissions on the past) switched it out. He put new fluid, filter, seals on it. Just took it for test drive and it still has the same bang when it shifts!!!! However the dealer told me there were no fault codes found. Any ideas??? I have 2 small children and need my car in working order. Thanks for any help!

Well unless the replacement trans has the same issue as your original one I'd say the problem lies elsewhere. Maybe the constant velocity joints (there are usually 2 per side inner and outer); they are located between the transmission and the front wheels, they drive turn the wheels and propel you down the road, think drive shafts but instead of connecting the trans to the rear axle as in conventional rear wheel drive cars they drive the front wheels hence "front wheel drive". Get the car inspected at Midas or other place that performs free inspections, get an estimate and got from there.
