98 sebring conv. 2.5l, intermittant hard start and wont take fuel,no codes
 

hi i hope some body here cac help me, ill start from the beginning, every couple of days the car is hard to start and when it does start it wont take fuel unless u press accelarator very slow once it gets above 2000 rpms u can put it right to the floor and it revs up fine but if u let it drop to idle and press it down it just stumbles and stalls,no check engine light and no codes even when it is running. ifirst changed the fuel filter,still have same problem,checked fuel pressure and its fine,the next time it did it i installed a new fuel pump because i thought it was a fuel volume problem and my garage was full so i couldnt really check the volume, it still does the same thing it was fine for 4 daysi also disconnected the vac line from the egr valve when it was running and starting good,(to rule out a piece of carbon getting stuck in the valve when it opened),the next day it did the same thing again and 2 hours later i started it and it was fine,(for 1 or 2 days and then it happened again, if theres any body that can point me in the right direction i would be thrilled. oh and i've been a tech. for 30 years so please no basic answers ie: plugs wires air filter etc.and its not an intake leak i smoked the intake manifold. thank you jimdec1.

Sounds like my '60 T-Bird would act when the points were shot.

Hard starting and won't take gas when you step on the pedal. Of course there's very little in the ignition system that's comparable with that ancient system and your car, but the basic problem was a weak spark.

The distributors in that 2.5 L engine are its Achilles heel. If you browse the forum here you'll find lots of discussions. If yours is original (or aftermarket) you might have to consider biting the bullet and popping for a new on.

Sorry you were disenchanted by the lack of responses. Maybe you can lead by example.

I am experiencing what sounds like the same problem you were having. How did you resolve it?
