after market sound system issues
 

I have the 99 sebring lxi (coupe) I hooked up an amp and a pair of 12" subs from my old ride.. all seemed fine until about 2 weeks ago when I noticed a humming and popping noise coming from my subs. at first I thought that maybe my alternator was on its last leg but my subs still makes this funny noise even when my car isn't running... now I know i shouldn't of done this but i ran my 4 gauge power wire through my driver side door jam... that could be what's causing this noise... i only ran my power wire like that because i couldn't find any openings in the fire wall on the driver side of my car.. and i don't own a power drill nore would i dear drill holes my self don't want to break anything. then theres my ground wire its a 8 gauge and not a 4 gauge like my power wire, im gonna go a head and change that and see if that helps my issue.. my amp is also grounded in the same place as the factory infinity amp. i ll be changing this as well. i think im gonna re route my power wire and run it through an opening that i found on the passenger side of my fire wall. and i also notice that the factory speaker wire runs down the driver side of my car and that's where my power wire for my amp is currently running from my battery to my amp in the trunk... what do u guys think i should do to fix this issue??

I am going to do my best and try to help you, but i really don't know where to start.

1. Your ground wire is just as important has your power wire if not more important,

2. you need to ground that wire away from other factory ground wires, also needs to be in a flat panel section of the car like the trunk floor or side panel spare wheel well

3. a popping noise can be cause for many reasons, Amp to powerful for subs, Subs are at the incorrect ohms, too small of gauge wire, bad ground, bad power wire, faulty receiver can cause popping noises, amp ground wire to close to factory ground wire.

Wow, 1500 watts. That's pretty impressive. Just so you know, The 2006 Sebring alternator can put out 120 amperes of current. Operating at full blast, that 1500 watt amplifier will eat up 125 amperes at 12 volts.

The '99 coupe probably has an 85 ampere alternator.

The shortfall has to come from somewhere.

Yeah my amp needs 0 gauge wiring and a 140 amp ALT, I do run a optima yellow top battery so that helps , but I never had my stereo at its full potential.

Ok I'm running 2 12" Sony explodes 1200 watts each off of my 2 channel 550watt punch... I changed the ground wire to 4 gauge and relocated some where else to be grounded but still hear that popping noise coming from my subs... I have a 760 watt Jensen I hooked it up and my subs no longer makes that popping sound.. so I guess its safe to say that my punch is on its last leg.. but I'm gonna go a head and fix all of my half ass wiring anyways... Make sure your alternator and battery are up to the task of powering all that amplification.
