Cleaning the Block deck

Can anyone help? Headgaskets to be replaced...but want to make sure the block deck is clean enough to install the heads...I know from the Haynes manual and gasket instruction to use gasket remover, wood or plastic scrapers....but deck surface still looks stained from the old gasket. Would this be normal? do I dare chance it with a Roloc and a white bristle pad? or go ahead and put the heads on. Here are a couple of pics one is clean the other needs to be done...cleaning is not easy....and time consuming with the wood and plastic...I found that a piece of plexiglass worked pretty good better thatn the wood..

I found that I could remove the stains from the bottom of my block while changing the oil pan gasket by using some Goo-Gone (it's a citrus-based solvent) and paper towels. It still takes some rubbing.

Thanks DC, I'll give it a shot!

DC, sorry for the delay....The Goo Gone....gave it a shot swung by LOWES and picked up a bottle and tried it out...sorry though, no affect...rubbed on the stains and even soaked them but nothing...:( So to this point I've followed the instructions and used only wood and plastic scraper..Permatex gasket remover and Goo gone...the surface I'm pretty sure is clean with no residue but ugly..I could go against the rules and put my die grinder with a white bristle 3m pad that's made for cleaning aluminum and brush it off...or bite the bullet and install the heads...any help or advice would be appreciated..
