Clock Spring

I have a 2002 sebring sedan. I was wondering if the clockspring snapping is a common problem after 100,000 miles. And I was also wanting to know if there is a way to fix it yourself? My mechanic told me it would cost about 250 for parts and labor to fix it. Is that reasonable. The clockspring costs 130 from the dealer and its a dealer only part. How would I go about fixing it?

You have to pull the steering wheel off, which involves removing the airbag. If you have the tools and know-how, it's not that difficult. Buy a Haynes manual and read through the parts on removing the airbag and steering wheel. If you think you can handle it, go for it.
