"Shimmy" usually refers to a vibration in the steering wheel. If the car lunges to the left that's something different.

Vibrations in the wheel are often caused by tires out of balance or out of round. If they occur during braking, they are often caused by warped rotors.

Vibrations can also be caused by worn driveaxles or worn ball joints.

Lunging or "pull" to one side can also be a symptom of worn ball joints.

If you have a set of jackstands, put the front end up solidly on the stands and give the front end a careful inspection. Look for wear patterns on the tires, loose ball joints, or other problems with the front end.

If you're not sure what to look for or are not comfortable with this, take it to a competent shop and have it inspected.

I've had a bad wheel bearing cause a bit of a "shim". You would know if the bearing was bad though by a constant hum (or even worse, a grind!)
