Heavy oil leak

Hey, I have a bad oil leak in my car. When the car is running apparently the oil comes out in a stream from somewhere behind the timing chain cover, is what I've been told from a local shop. I talked to a few different people who thought it might be related to a cam shaft or something like that. The local Chrysler guy said if that's the problem, its about $500 to fix, parts and labor and everything.

Does that sound reasonable, if that is what it is?

Its a 2006 Sebring. I'm not sure about the engine size. I haven't seen the actual leak myself but I know the oil has been running way low and I've seen puddles. Yesterday I took it in to get tires and they said they noticed a trail of oil, so when they had it up in the air that's when they said they noticed it was coming from somewhere behind the timing belt cover, I think is what they called it.

I took the car to my fiancee's father, he noticed that it was also coming from there in a stream when the car was running. He called several of his friends who work on cars, told them where the oil leak was coming from, and all three of them independently of one another thought crank shaft or cam shaft, I don't remember what he said. He called the Chrysler service and asked how much it would be, if in fact that part that all three of the guys thought it might be was in fact what was wrong. But nobody has actually physically taken anything apart yet to see if that is actually what is wrong yet.

If it's a 2.4 L , the Chrysler guy should know there were a few problems with the thrust bearings coming out and making the front crankshaft seal leak...or even come out. If they mention ANYTHING about a front crankshaft seal....stop.
