Help running horribly!
This is my mom's car and she has had it to the dealer and carx, which neither has fixed the problem and I'm taking the time to attempt to fix. Several months ago it started idling really rough and recently the check engine light came on with random cyl. misfire. Seems to run well off idle.
What has been replaced: Spark plugs per chrysler specs. Spark plug wires Upper and Lower intake gaskets Distributor Cap and rotor What I have checked and Know: There is low vacuum of about 12 Hg which fluctuates 1-2 Hg's I checked the spark plug wires and they are all good. The ignition coil has a primary resistance of 1.0 and secondary I'm getting a reading in like the 20 mega range, which are both out of chrysler spec. All the fuel injectors are working by listening to them with stethoscope. Cyl.'s 2,4,6 all have spark, not sure how to check the back with intake in way. The timing is fluctuating a lot about 15 degree with the timing light. I want to check the fuel pressure, but need to buy the special adapter for the fuel rail. Should I check compression? How to check compression on the back cyl.'s? Does the ignition coil sound likely? Want to be sure before buying a $200 distributor. Any suggestions or thoughts welcome! Thanks! 1997 Chrysler Sebring Coupe 65,000 miles. 2.5L |
Sounds more like a vacuum leak. Take a piece of tubing and hold one end close to your ear, and search around the engine with the other end. You might find it that way.

I will try that tomorrow thanks!

EGR valve is stuck open or leaking. (low idle vacuum) I'm willing to bet the intake plenum gets hot enough to cook a steak on..wel done? Using a timing light on a computer controlled engine is pointless and means nothing because you can't adjust anything. At the moment, I would rule out distributor because of the low mileage. Usually they go bad after someone has neglected the service interval for the plugs/wires OR ignored a severe misfire for extended periods (which is not the case here)
