Problem with stuttering in a Sebring -05
 

We have a Chrysler Sebring Limited, from -05. When driving the engine performs weirdly - which could be described as "stuttering". We had the same problem in our previous car, also a Chrysler, a Neon from -95.

We took the -95 Neon to a mechanic and had the oxygen sensor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxygen_sensor) replaced, which fixed the problem on that car.

So when this problem appeared on our new Sebring -05, we took it to a mechanic and had four oxygen sensors replaced in it. But the problem remains this time.

Is it the oxygen sensor? Could there be something else wrong?

Cycle the ignition key ON - OFF - ON - OFF - ON within 5 seconds . The odometer will then give you any stored error codes.

Tried this and got code P0016. Misalignment in camshaft or crankshaft sensor(s). I further research, I might also have a stretched timing belt. The hesitation and stuttering only occurs during medium-heavy acceleration. Also, the engine seems to be idling rough. Since the car has 143K miles on it, I am thinking new belt. Anyone have any ideas on how much it costs to replace a belt on the 2005 2.4 liter engine? Thanks.

Whatever they charge, it'll be cheaper than what it will cost if the belt breaks at speed. 145,000 miles is a long time to go on a timing belt. You got your money's worth out of that belt. Time for a new one, for sure.

I second what dcotter said. If the timing belt breaks, you will have an engine that will be worthless. I am approaching 100,000 miles with my wifes 02 Sebring and plan to do the change as soon as the weather warms up. Along with the belt it is strongly suggested that the water pump and belt tensioner also be replaced as they are right there and have the same miles on them. I think I priced out the parts to be around $150 and two to three hours of work. For the money I'll be saving I don't care if it takes even more time. I think the stealer wanted about $600 or so to do the job.
