Question about front hub.

I have a 2004 sebring lx with 101,000 miles and when driving I hear a loud hum coming from frontend. As I'm driving if I turn the steering wheel slightly to the right it goes away,(as in swerving to the right)then straighten it and it comes right backI've rotated the tires with no change in sound. I'm thinking a front hub but not sure. I would apprieciate some help and what does changing a hubconsist of ?

RE: Question about front hub.

Replacing the hub is a fairly big job for a home mechanic. You will need to pull off the brake caliper and separate the lower ball joints, among other things. You might want to go out and buy a Haynes manual to get a good idea as to what's involved. Even if you decide it'sbeyond what you are willing/able to do, you will be better able to discuss the job with your mechanic.
You might consider putting the front of the car up on jack stands and running the wheels up to speed to see if you can pinpoint the noise. A mechanic's stethoscope could be very helpful if itreally is the hub bearing. You don't want to spend the time and money replacing the hub bearing if it's not the cause.
Be sure to have both front wheels off the ground and have the care solidly sitting on good jackstands (NOT the car jack) before trying this. Alternatively, you can just spin the wheel (off the ground, obviously)by hand to see if it's noisy or rough.

RE: Question about front hub.

Thanks for the reply dcotter, My buddy has a hydraulic lift, so we'll do as you said to see if we can pinpoint the problem area. He also has experience changing hubs if that is the problem.

It can also be a half shaft noise.
