Question About Ignition Keys...

I have a 2005 Sebring 4-door sedan. From what I've been able to find out, my car has keyless entry. I'm assuming that it also has an alarm system. The alarm, if it has one, doesn't seem to be working. When I bought the car I didn't get any remote key fobs with it. I do plan on getting some but first I want to deal with the ignition key. I only got one working transponder key with my car when I bought it. I ordered a blank transponder key online. After I have the new key cut I want to get it programmed. I am wondering if the new key can be programmed if the alarm system isn't working? Or does that even have anything to do with it? Do the dealerships use the car to program new keys or do they have some other way of doing it?

Your owners manual contains instructions for programming keys and remotes. If you have only one working transponder key an no remotes you can't do it yourself. You'll need to go to the dealer. You can probably save significant money by buying a new blank transponder key and remotes on eBay and having the dealer program them for you. The dealer can also look up your VIN and tell you all the options the car was built with including an alarm system.

Last 8 of VIN I can tell you for sure what it has.
