replaced distributor won't start

car wouldn't start, no spark, lots of history:

It finally warmed up enough to work on it again and I swapped out the distributor, put car back together and tried to start. I got a spark with a tester but there doesn't seem to be any ignition.

I photographed the old distributor rotor and the non contact end seemed to point straight up. I aligned the new one identically and it would not fit, I had to turn it about 60 deg clock wise to seat.

if it were out of alignment, wouldn't at least one cylinder try to fire?
How can I find info on how they should align?

This is one in the same there is not a difference. Did u get a remain used or new one?>

I got a spark but the cylinder didn't seem to fire. no louder noise of gas igniting and no rotation other than what was provided by the starter.

best bets is to align the timing marks to TDC then install distributor.

Finally finding time to work on this monstrosity. I have the new distributor on and lined up, I think. I tested it with the bolts on loose and it started right up but ran on a high idle. So I finished hooking up all the accessories, tightened all the bolts and shut the hood and tried cranking again. it turns over but immediately dies like it is out of gas. If I hold the throttle down while cranking, it will turnover and run rough. Putting out lots of exhaust, then stalls when I allow it to go back to idle.
I am hoping this is residual from sitting with year old gas but I'd like an expert to help point me in the right direction of what may be wrong now.

PS looks like the oil was above full and after riding the throttle for a high idle a while it now runs a sick sounding idle at ~900 with a good bit of smoke still coming out.
