Default 2006 300c Shifter was stuck in park, but then

I am aware that the shifter being stuck in park is a common issue. At the time however, I didn't know what the problem was, applied too much pressure to the shifting **** and manage to break something.
It will now *Sometimes* shift when I have the brake on but you can tell when your moving it that something is wrong and it does not appear to be really shifting at all, for example it may show on the digital display that it is in neutral or reverse, however it is not actually doing anything to the transmission. So when it says its in neutral, it is still in park, same for reverse.

So I am assuming what the LCD displays on the dash is originating from the shifting assembly itself.

My questing is, because it was forced out of park, did I break something in addition to the shift interlock latch?

this happened to my 2007 300c. The problem was the "shifter cable" was not connected. bought a new one for under $100 maybe even around $50 and had it installed and no more problems like that.
