Oil light problem

My oil light comes on when I press the gas as I'm driving. What could be the problem?

tarhealcracker 09-24-2016 06:26 AM

Jason,
you haven't given us much to work with re the car, the age, mileage condition, how long the light stays on, etc.

All that aside, the usual suspect is the oil pressure sender (no big deal) but this is not something to fool with. Get a temporary mechanical gauge installed PDQ so you can see what is actually happening . Continuing to drive with low oil pressure is right up there with top dumb things to do.

FIRST: Turn off the engine and DON'T run it with the oil light on.
SECOND: Check the oil level and make sure it's up to where it should be. If the oil level is up, have the car towed, not driven, to a service facility and have it checked. If the oil level is down, walk, don't drive, somewhere and buy enough oil to bring it up to the proper level. Fill the oil to proper level before starting the engine. Then find out why the level was low and address that problem. Running an engine without proper oil pressure will lead to total engine destruction in a matter of minutes.

Do keep us informed how this shakes out. We can all benefit from the results.

Jason old boy. What have you discovered?

Maybe he discovered that going 50,000 miles before changing the oil is not a good idea.

????????

There are some who learn that lesson the hard way.

I hope I'm wrong about that.

Do ya suppose that old Jason has not found the problem and is still driving around with the light on and don't want to tell us?

dcotter0579 10-06-2016 10:39 AM

If he drove more than a few miles with the light on, he probably blew the engine and doesn't need to come back here.

My sister did that to her Mustang. "Well, the light came on but it was still running okay..."

Until it wasn't. :-(
